The Moon's sign today, in two zodiacs
The Moon moves fast, about 13 degrees a day, so it changes sign every two and a quarter days or so. This page gives its sign twice. The Vedic sign is sidereal, measured against the fixed stars. The Western sign is tropical, tied to the seasons and counted from the spring equinox.
The two zodiacs are now offset by about 24 degrees, because the equinox slowly slides back against the stars, about one degree every 72 years. So for about four fifths of the time, the Vedic sign is one sign earlier than the Western one. Neither is wrong: they are two ways of dividing the same sky.
The nakshatra: the Moon's daily station
Classical Vedic astrology divides the Moon's path into 27 nakshatras, one for each day or so of the Moon's round of about 27 days. Each is 13°20' wide, and each has its own name and ruling planet. They are finer than the signs: the Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra, against two and a quarter days in a sign.
Classical astrology names the Moon the mind. So the nakshatra of the day is the Moon's station for that day: the particular stretch of sky the mind's planet is crossing, with its own name and character.
Full moon and new moon: Purnima and Amavasya
At the full moon, Purnima in the Indian calendar, the Moon stands opposite the Sun and its whole face is lit. It rises around sunset, sets around sunrise, and always falls in the sign opposite the Sun's. At the new moon, Amavasya, the Moon sits with the Sun and its lit face is turned away from us.
Between the two, the Moon is waxing, growing fuller each night, or waning, growing thinner. The tool shows which, and how much of the disc is lit. The Indian calendar names its months after the nakshatra near which the full moon falls: Chaitra after Chitra, Kartika after Krittika.
What the phase means here
We keep this plain. The phase is astronomy: where the Moon is, how much of it is lit, and when that changes. This page makes no claims about what a phase does to you. In India, Purnima and Amavasya have long been kept as days to fast, to pray, or to remember family who have died.
Many people simply like to mark the full moon: a short walk outside, an evening with the phone put away, a line in a notebook about the month just gone. That is our suggestion, a way to notice the month turning, and it needs no more reason than that.
