What Mercury retrograde is
About three times a year, for about three weeks each time, Mercury appears to stop, move backward through the zodiac, stop again and then move forward. It does not really reverse. Mercury is passing between the Earth and the Sun, at its nearest to us, and from where we stand it seems to slide back against the stars.
Around each retrograde is a shadow: the stretch before it, when Mercury first crosses the degrees it will later go back over, and the stretch after, when it crosses them a third time. The shadow is an idea from modern Western astrology. The list below shows its dates alongside the retrograde itself.
What classical Vedic astrology says
Here the two traditions part ways. In popular Western astrology, Mercury retrograde is read as a time when messages, plans and devices tend to go wrong. Classical Vedic astrology reads a retrograde planet the other way: as strong. The classical texts give a retrograde planet the highest motional strength it can have, and its strength is traditionally held equal to that of an exalted planet.
Mercury is classical astrology's name for speech. So in this reading, a retrograde Mercury is speech at full strength, not speech broken. The two traditions do agree on one thing: in these weeks Mercury matters more than usual, not less.
Sensible habits for the three weeks
The popular advice is sound on its own terms, and we offer it as exactly that: good practice, ours, not a classical rule. Back up your files. Re-read a message before you send it. Give a contract a second look rather than signing it in a rush. Leave a little room in travel plans.
None of this needs a planet to justify it. What the retrograde offers is a reminder, three times a year, to do the careful things you already know to do. If the classical reading is speech at full strength, the practical one follows: say what you mean, then check it once more.
Vedic and Western dates
The dates are the same in both zodiacs. Mercury stops and turns on the same day whichever system you use, so the periods on this page match any Western calendar. Only the sign names can differ.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The two are offset by about 24 degrees, so a retrograde in Western Libra often falls in Vedic Virgo. The list gives both sign names, so you can match it to whichever calendar you follow.
Questions people ask
Is Mercury retrograde right now?
The box at the top of this page answers that for today, and shows when the current or next retrograde begins and ends. Mercury is retrograde about three times a year for about three weeks each, so it spends a little under a fifth of the year moving backward.
How long does Mercury retrograde last?
Usually a little over three weeks, from the day Mercury appears to stop and turn back to the day it turns forward again. With the shadow before and after, each lasting two to three weeks, the whole stretch runs to about two months.
Is Mercury retrograde bad?
Not in classical Vedic astrology, which counts a retrograde planet as strong. Popular Western astrology reads these weeks as a time when things tend to go wrong. The advice that comes with it, backing up files and re-reading messages, is sensible on any day. Nothing here predicts that anything will break.
I was born with Mercury retrograde. What does that mean?
In classical Vedic astrology, a planet retrograde at your birth is counted as strong, not damaged. Mercury is the tradition's name for speech, so the reading leans toward speech given extra weight. How that tends to show depends on the rest of your chart: Mercury's sign, its house, and what else touches it.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow?
The shadow is the stretch of the zodiac Mercury crosses three times: forward before the retrograde, backward during it, and forward again after it. The idea comes from modern Western astrology. The pre-shadow and post-shadow each last two to three weeks, and the list gives their dates.
Do other planets go retrograde?
Yes. Every planet except the Sun and the Moon appears to move backward at times. Mars does so for about two and a half months every two years or so, and Jupiter and Saturn for four to five months every year. Classical Vedic astrology counts each of them as strong while retrograde.
